MHLONGO’S KINGDOM
HISTORY OF MHLONGO CLAN
Part 1: Kingdom of Mhlongo is as follows:
From Mhlongo clan, we find Magwaza, Guma, Zincuma, Ncengwa and Masinga. They are located at
Mthinemide next to Melmoth down to Mfanefile, Ntembeni, Nkwalini until they reach Mhlathuze south.
That is why Mhlongo kingdom was once known as Mhlathuzeni. Mhlongo clan has a rich history.
Among them there are heroes and heroines. We find Mhlongo clan led by Mhlongo (Dlomo) of
Nqeshe. Mhlongo was not Nqeshe’s heir. Mhlongo’s heir was Nzawu who happened to be in
Mpaphala.
Upon passing away of Nqeshe, Nzawu came soughed to acquire chieftainship, only to find that
Mhlongo was already ascended the throne. Mhlongo was a charming person among people, and when
Nzawu came, he was disowned by his family. Seeing that the family does no longer want him, he
escaped, and left Mhlongo with peace.
Mhlongo’s first son was MBhengi (also known as Bhebhe). MBhengi, then had house in Ngugeni area
next to Mfanefile. He then married Mfundi kaKhondlo, Qwabe who gave birth to Mgabhi, the Prince
and Nandi and Nxazonke, the Princess. Bhebhe passed away while Nandi was a young girl. Nandi
grew under his brother, Mgabhi who has home at Bozeni by Umlovu River.
Mgabhi has three sons, Songweni, Mthandeka and Makhedama. We find Nandi giving birth to Shaka
after having an affair with Senzangakhona Zulu. As a Zulu culture, Mhlongo family went to report
pregnancy of Nandi to Zulu family, who refused to acknowledge that Nandi’s child belongs to Zulu
family. They mocked that Nandi is suffering from Ishaka, which was a disease that makes one’s
stomach swell. As a result of that tease, Nandi’s child was name “Shaka”. Mudli, did not acknowledge
Shaka because he realised that Nandi and Senzangakhona were relatives.
It’s this Shaka who were denied, but made Zulu nation a known and respected nation around the
world. Shaka grew at ELangeni with his mother, Nandi. Even at ELangeni, Shaka was mistreated. In
herd field, Shaka was abused by Makhedama. Makhedama forced Shaka to do all mischievous things.
Women of ELangeni mocked Shaka that he would never be a King of KwaZulu. One should see it in
Shaka’s praise .
Upon getting old, Shaka fought with people of ELangeni Makhedamas people. Upon conquering them,
he brought them before a traditional court for mistreating him while at ELangeni. Those who were
found guilty were executed. But, king Shaka did not execute Makhedama. Instead, he ordered him to
go and build Zulwini home by Ntembeni. After a period of time, Shaka killed Makhedama and built his
house next to Makhedama’s house and he called that house, “Ndlamathe because Mgabhi women
said he won’t be king, then they have eaten their own saliva.
On the death of Shaka’s mother in 1827, Makhedama and his descendent did not moan, Shaka was
irritated by their conduct and he decided to kill them all. A close ally of Shaka, Mbopha kaSithayi
notified them that Shaka is angry about not coming to moan the death of his mother. He further
advised them to come and moan. Shaka heard from his spies that Makhedama is coming and ordered
his group to catch them at Ngudwini and kill them all.
